I wouldn't buy wine from these companies

I have just added a page to this blog listing companies from whom I would not buy wine.

For a variety of reasons I would not consider buying wine from them. This would apply in particular to ordering wines en primeur.  I would not buy for a variety of reasons: the lack of an established track record, the use of cold calls especially when persistent, charging an upfront commission, selling well above the price these wines can be bought from other companies, lack of hard information about the company – its officers, history etc on websites and brochures, exaggerated and unlikely claims made by recently formed companies. The reasons for not wishing to buy from one of these companies will obviously vary from company to company.

  1. Jim thats a long list!! what is the likelihood one of them will sue you? I suppose an absolute defense against defamation is the truth.

  2. I haven't defamed any of these companies. I have merely indicated that I would not buy wine from them, which is only the reverse of indicating that there are companies from whom I would consider buying.

  3. I support Jim. People should be made aware that they should do their home work if they are going to spend on fine wine. That is only opinion and there seem to be no indication that these companies are fraudulant. Jim only states the facts

  4. Do you have evidence for all of your statements? If you do not then it is not advisable to print unclear remarks or comments of business practises. The kind of evidence I mean is something you could show another person or a court of law to back up the claims.

  6. If you state descriptions that are printed as facts such as, 'John stole 5 Pounds', and this could not be proven true by the writer, you could be sued for defamtion. If you state, 'John is a funny man', this is an opinion. A company can not be defamed in exactly the same way but the theory works the same. If you write that a company doesn't offer a good service then this is opinion, but if you write that a company has done something specific then you need evidence to back it up. As an example, how can you prove beyond doubt that a company has 'cold called' customers? Just on a further note, a witness (someone claiming they were called), is not admissable. It can cost a company between 20-50k to have a case completed, but if they win you will be liable for costs and damages.

  7. Don't go for wines that are priced too low. This often means that you are getting a wine that hasn't fully matured. In order to avoid this, check out review sites that give information on how much the wine is really worth.
